A pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Led by John Roff

Monday 9th - Thursday 19th November 2020

It is so moving to walk down the meandering path of the Mount of Olives, to sit in the Garden of Gethsemane, and then to enter the walls of the Old City and to walk the evocative narrow bustling traffic free streets, continuing along ‘The Way of the Cross’. Then Bethlehem and the Shepherd’s fields, the village (green and peaceful) where Mary and Elizabeth met, Jericho and the sycamore tree, a dip in the Dead Sea, the shores of Lake Galilee, crossing by boat, the synagogue in Capernaum, taxis to take us up the Mount of Transfiguration - it is what to leave out that is our problem!

We will be aware of, and learn of, some of the tension created by three world faiths regarding this land as holy; we will see the price some people have to pay.

Hermione and I have been with church groups on 5 or 6 occasions - and yet, at any location, no two experiences have ever been the same. We have tried to use our experience to create the very best itinerary, avoiding long journeys in the coach, where possible. We plan simple outdoor acts of worship and informal eucharists, and a brief time each evening when we can make suggestions and plan the next day together.

We are really excited about being part of this November 2020 group.

Because it is more days than many trips, we have ensured there will be time to take in the very best of the experience afforded by Israel and by the Palestinian territories. We put a high priority on enjoying one another’s company, and looking after one another. For many of us, travelling via Manchester Airport is a good plus. We hope for warm sunny weather in November (not overbearingly hot!) And every time you read or hear a place mentioned in a Bible passage in future, our holiday will live on - ‘I’ve been there!’
