A pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Led by Bishop Tony Robinson

Monday 21st - Monday 28th November 2022

A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land is one of the special moments in most Christians’ lives. I hope you will come with me on this pilgrimage and walk in the steps of Jesus. The gospels take on a completely new meaning when we can picture for ourselves the places where they took place 2000 years ago. The Holy Land is sadly a place where there is ongoing disputes over land and government. It will be an opportunity for us to learn more about the present situation from people on the ground who experience these issues daily.

We will also be able to help and support our Palestinian brothers and sisters.
I look forward to sharing this unique experience with you.

The Rt. Rev’d. Tony Robinson
Area Bishop of Wakefield

Monday - Day 1
We meet at Manchester Airport for our flight to Tel Aviv. On arrival we will be met by our guide and transfer to our hotel in Nazareth for dinner and overnight.
Tuesday - Day 2
Today we visit Nazareth and the Church of the Annunciation.  Continue to the Old Synagogue Church followed by a visit of Cana and finally to Mount Tabor where we Celebrate Mass.
Dinner and overnight.
Wednesday - Day 3
This morning we drive to the Mount of Beatitudes where we will celebrate Mass in the open air overlooking the places where Jesus lived and worked. We return to the lake’s shores to visit Tabgha and the Church of the Loaves and Fishes and continue to the Church of the St Peter Primacy.
In the afternoon we visit Capernaum, the centre of Jesus’ Galilean Ministry, to view the house of Peter and a 4th century synagogue built over the site where Jesus may have often preached. Time for prayer and reflection before we leave by boat and sail on the Sea of Galilee to the town of Tiberias and return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Thursday - Day 4
We leave Galilee and make our journey south along the Jordan valley to the oasis city of Jericho, “the Biblical City of Palm Trees”. We view the Mount of Temptation and the Monastery of Qarantal which clings precariously to the face of the mountain, before continuing to the traditional site where John baptised Jesus and where we will have an opportunity to renew our own Baptism vows.
In the afternoon we drive to the shores of the Dead Sea to visit the historic site of Qumran where the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered and the remains of an Essene Monastery. We will have an opportunity to float in the warm waters of the Dead Sea before we proceed up through the hills of the Judean wilderness towards Jerusalem. We make a brief stop on the summit of Mount Scopus for a breath-taking view of the old city of Jerusalem and its beautiful surrounding medieval walls before continuing to our hotel in Bethlehem for dinner and overnight.
Friday - Day 5
The morning is spent n and around Bethlehem where we visit the places associated with the birth of Jesus. Visit the Shepherds’ Fields, and the Church of the Nativity and a tour of one of the three major refugee camps in the city to see the signs of hope.
In the afternoon we leave Bethlehem and return to Jerusalem to the summit of the Mount of Olives for another spectacular view of the old walled city. We walk the Palm Sunday route, making our way slowly downhill. We begin at Bethphage, continue to the Church of the Pater Noster, where we recall Jesus’ teaching of the Lord’s Prayer to his disciples and the Church of Dominus Flevit, where Jesus wept over the old city. Finally, we reach the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations and recall Jesus’ agonised prayers prior to his arrest and the failure of his closest friends to keep awake and watch with him.
We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Saturday - Day 6
After breakfast we drive to Mount Zion where we visit the Upper Room associated with the Last Supper and the Dormition Abbey. We continue to the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu built at the top of an ancient set of steps which lead up from the City of David. Here will celebrate Mass. In the afternoon we walk the Way of the Cross through the narrow streets of the Old City of Jerusalem arriving at the Church of the Holy Sepulchure, believed to be built over the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection. The remainder of the afternoon will be free to revisit favourite sites or to wander through the streets of the Old City.
Dinner and overnight in Bethlehem.
Sunday - Day 7
This morning we drive to Mount Zion to celebrate Mass at the Abbey of the Dormition. We then continue to West Jerusalem and visit Yad Vashem holocaust memorial museum and park. Return to our hotel where the remainder of the afternoon will be free to explore the Old City.
After dinner we are invited to a talk about the Christians of Gaza and their plight.

Therefore, if you check-in immediately after a night flight this would normally count as one night’s accommodation. Day rooms are subject to availability/cost and should be arranged locally with the accommodation management.
