A Biblical Tour of the Holy Land

I would like to invite you to take part in The Sole Bay Team of Churches Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

I have organised and led seven previous visits to Israel and Sinai and Israel and Jordan. Israel is a country rich with historical, archaeological and religious significance. A visit to Israel and Palestine enables a pilgrim to walk in the very steps of Jesus.

We will journey to the place of Jesus’ birth, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection. Anyone who visits the Holy Land always recalls places where they have been especially moved by a sense of our Lord’s presence. Within a short distance, in Jerusalem, we will visit some of the most sacred places on earth for Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Ask anyone who participated in our previous pilgrimages and they will recommend the experience unreservedly.

Day 1: Welcome to the Holy Land / Jerusalem
After your arrival in Tel Aviv, you will be met by our Christian guide and driven to our hotel in Jerusalem for check-in.

Day 2: Jerusalem
After breakfast, we will drive to the top of the Mount of Olives for a spectacular view of Jerusalem. We will visit the Church of Pater Noster where Jesus taught the Lord’s Prayer to His disciples, the Chapel of Ascension, and Dominus Flevit, where Our Lord wept over Jerusalem. We will then proceed to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations, which commemorates Jesus’ Agony in the Garden.
This afternoon we will view the Dome of the Rock and the el Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount and visit the Wailing Wall. Afterwards, we will enter the Old City and visit the Church of Saint Anne, the Pool of Bethesda, the Chapel of Flagellation, Lithostrotos, the Arch of the Ecce Homo, then follow the Via Dolorosa (Way of the Cross) to the holiest shrine in Christendom to visit Golgotha and the Tomb of Our Lord.
We will then return to our hotel for dinner together.

Day 3: Bethlehem / Jerusalem
This morning we will travel to Bethlehem and visit the Church of the Nativity, the Manger, the Church of St. Catherine and the Grotto of St. Jerome. Then continue to Beit Sahur to see the site that commemorates the Shepherds’ Fields where we celebrate the Eucharist. In Bethlehem, we will also have an opportunity to visit Claire Anastas’s home and guest house and the Aida Refugee Camp, home to nearly 5,000 residents, where we will learn about the local Palestinian population living in the West Bank, before returning to Jerusalem.

Day 4: Jerusalem
Today we will join the local Christian-Palestinian congregation and celebrate the Eucharist at St. George’s Cathedral. We will then proceed to Ein Karen to see the Visitation Church where Mary proclaimed her famous “Magnificat” and the Church of St. John the Baptist, where he was born. From there, we will continue to the Israel Museum, where we will see a scale model of Jerusalem as it was during the time of Jesus, as well as the Shrine of the Book, which houses an exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
We will conclude the day with a visit to the deeply moving Yad Vashem Memorial dedicated to the Jewish Holocaust.

Day 5: Dead Sea area / Tiberias
We will start the day by driving to Bethany to visit the site of the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus and the Tomb of Lazarus. We then proceed to the Dead Sea for a swim in its uniquely salty, mineral-laden waters and continue on to Masada, the fortress stronghold built by Herod the Great, which was later the scene of the final siege of the Great Revolt by Jewish zealots in 73 AD. Afterwards, we will drive to Qumran to visit the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.

Day 6: Dead Sea – Free Day

Day 7: Baptismal Site / Jordan Valley / Tiberias
After Breakfast drive the Jordan valley up to Tiberias. Visit Jericho then continue to the Baptismal Site. Check in at our hotel on the gentle shores of the Sea of Galilee.

Day 8: Tiberias 
After breakfast, we will enjoy a scenic boat ride across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, home of Our Lord during His ministry. After visiting the synagogue where He taught, we will travel to Tabgha, site of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, and to the nearby Church of the Primacy of Peter. Then we drive up to the Mount of the Beatitudes to visit the site of the Sermon on the Mount and to celebrate the Eucharist.

In the afternoon we will take an excursion to the summit of Mount Tabor to visit the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus before returning to our hotel in Tiberias for the night.

Day 9: Nazareth /Tiberias
Today we will drive to Cana of Galilee, where Our Lord performed the first miracle – changing water into wine at the wedding feast. Here, we’ll invite couples to renew their marriage vows. From there, we’ll head to Nazareth to visit the Basilica of the Annunciation and Mary’s Well, then continue to Acre, whose history dates back almost 4,000 years, and which played a pivotal role during the Crusader period. Here we will experience a truly medieval atmosphere and descend into the subterranean city to visit the fortress of the Hospitallers, the Order of the Knights of St. John. We will walk through the large halls and imagine the pilgrims, knights, and Crusaders dining, celebrating, and running the markets there almost 1,000 years ago. After we return to the surface, we will explore the Ottoman phase of Acre and then return to Tiberias.

Day 10: Haifa / Return to Airport
This morning we will leave Tiberias early and travel along the Mediterranean coast to ancient Caesarea, the capital of the Roman Procurators, where we will have a brief visit before proceeding to the airport in Tel Aviv for our return flight home.

Passports, Visas and Vaccinations
Travellers are responsible for ensuring that they have a valid passport for travel to the relevant countries and that it is valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel. A visa is not required for British Passport holders visiting Israel. At the time this brochure went to press no vaccinations or inoculations are required for travel but you may wish to consult your own doctor for advice concerning this. Further Information And Paying The Balance
Further information will be sent to you regarding any action that may be required approximately 10 weeks before departure. A final invoice will also be sent at this time and the balance for the tour must be paid at least 8 weeks before departure.

Travel Information
Full travel information, including details of meeting points, flight times, accommodation and travel information, will be sent to you approximately 2 weeks before departure. Normally, tickets are not issued but are handed to you at the airport or departure point by our representative who will be there to ensure that you depart without a hitch and to deal with any last minute difficulties.

Travel Insurance

Gratuities
Our normal procedure is to deal with tips on a group basis and these are included in the price. The tour leader will distribute them to the guide, driver and hotels on your behalf. Individual tipping is not recommended unless the circumstances are exceptional.

Room Check In and Check Out Times
The standard international practice is to let rooms from midday to midday. However times do vary. Check-in times are usually between 2pm and 3pm, check-out times between 11am and 12 noon on the day of departure. Therefore, if you check-in immediately after a night flight this would normally count as one night’s accommodation. Similarly if your return flight is at night you will normally be required to vacate your room at 12 noon prior to leaving for the airport. Day rooms are subject to availability/cost and should be arranged locally with the accommodation management.
