A wonderful tour of the Holy Land

Led by Rev Alan Munden

Sunday 16th - Monday 24th April 2023

Visiting the Holy Land is always a special experience. We see places already known to us through our Bible reading eg Jerusalem, Jericho, Galilee and Capernaum; and also significant sites such as Herodion, Masada and Qumran.

The combination of three world faiths, history, geography and politics provides an interesting background to our own Christian faith and worship.

Alan Munden, who lives in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a member of Jesmond Parish Church. He has been to Israel on a number of occasions and is particularly interested in biblical archaeology and the history of Protestant mission.

Sunday
We leave Manchester on a direct flight to Tel Aviv, where we will be met on arrival for transfer to our hotel in Netanya for dinner and overnight.

Monday
We drive to Caesarea (the Roman capital) to see the amphitheatre and aqueduct and then onto Megiddo and Nazareth Village (depicting life as in the times of Jesus), we continue to Tiberias for dinner and overnight.

Tuesday
We sail across the Sea of Galilee on a replica boat, pausing during this for quiet mediation. We see the 2000 year old ancient boat and visit some of sites associated with Jesus’ ministry, Capernaum (Jesus’ hometown) and Bethsaida (the hometown of Peter, Andrew and Philip).
Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

Wednesday
Today we visit Migdal (to see an ancient synagogue and modern chapel) and Chorazim. Continue to the Mount of Beatitudes, associated with the Sermon on the Mount and Tabgha, which commemorates the feeding of the five thousand.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Thursday
We begin the day at the Garden tomb. Visit the Western Wall Tunnels and the Davidson Centre (to the south of the Temple Mount) and finally the City of David excavations.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Friday
This morning we visit the Israel Museum (Dead Sea scrolls and Model of Jerusalem); We drive to Qasr al-Yahud (associated with the baptism of Jesus). We then trace the Palm Sunday path down from the Mount of Olives into the city, pausing at the Dominus Flavit church (recalling Jesus weeping over Jerusalem) and see Gethsemane.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Saturday
We visit Herodion (Herod’s palace and burial place) and drive along the shore of the Dead Sea (the lowest place on the earth’s surface), and see Qumran on the way to visit Masada (another of Herod’s fortresses, and the famed site of Jewish resistance); depending on the weather, it may be possible to “float” in the Dead Sea.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Sunday
We join the 9.30 am service at Christ Church. In the afternoon visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
