A wonderful tour of the Holy Land

Led by the Rev’d Alan Munden

Monday 30th March - Monday 6th April 2020

Visiting the Holy Land is always a special experience. We see places already known to us through our Bible reading eg Jerusalem, Jericho, Galilee and Capernaum; and significant sites such as Herodion, Masada and Qumran.

The combination of three world faiths, history, geography and politics provides an interesting background to our own Christian faith and worship.

Alan Munden is on the staff team of Jesmond Parish Church, Newcastle upon Tyne having previously served in Anglican churches in the Midlands. This will be his eighth visit to Israel.

His main interests are biblical archaeology and the history of Protestant mission.

We leave Manchester on a direct flight to Tel Aviv, where we will be met on arrival for transfer to our hotel in Netanya for dinner and overnight.

We drive to Caesarea (the Roman capital) to see the amphitheatre and aquaduct and then onto Megiddo and Nazareth Village (depicting life as in the times of Jesus), we continue to Tiberias for dinner and overnight.

We start the day with a visit to the 2000 year old ancient boat at a nearby kibbutz. We sail across the Sea of Galilee on a replica boat, pausing during this for quiet mediation. We visit sites associated with Jesus’ ministry eg Migdal (to see an ancient synagogue and modern chapel), Chorazim, Capernaum (Jesus’ home town) and Bethsaida (the home town of Peter, Andrew and Philip).
Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

We travel south, visiting Beth Shean, Qasr al Yahud (place of John’s baptisms); Jericho (one of Herod’s palaces), Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, possibly associated with John the Baptist; arriving in Jerusalem and visit the Israel Museum.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

We visit the Herodion (Herod’s palace and burial place) and drive along the shore of the Dead Sea (the lowest place on the earth’s surface), and visit Masada (another of Herod’s fortresses, and the famed site of Jewish resistance); depending on the weather, it may be possible to “float” in the Dead Sea.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Visit the Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds Fields. Return to Jerusalem for a walking tour of the Old City.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

We join the 9.30 am service at Christ Church. We then trace the Palm Sunday path down from the Mount of Olives into the city, pausing at the Dominus Flavit church (recalling Jesus weeping over Jerusalem). We see Gethsemane and the City of David.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

We visit the Jerusalem Archaeological Park (to the south of the Temple Mount), the Western Wall Tunnel and Vad Vashem (the large complex opened in 2005).
In the late afternoon we travel to Tel Aviv for our return flight to Manchester.
