The Church in Westbury Park tour to the Holy Land

Led by Rev Emma Langley

Monday 18th - Tuesday 26th November 2019

Welcome to the Church in Westbury Park Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This is an incredible opportunity for us to walk in the footsteps of Jesus as we trace his life from birth in Bethlehem to life in and around Lake Galilee and finally following him to the places of crucifixion, resurrection and ascension in Jerusalem.

As we travel and eat and pray together we will also be experiencing something of the life of ordinary people in one of the most controversial parts of the world. We will meet with Palestinian Christians and have the opportunity to discover what life is like for them. We will stay both in Israel and in the Occupied Territories behind the so-called ‘Peace Wall’ and we will go to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial to learn about the actions that resulted in the death of 6 million Jews.

It will be a time for going deeper into our faith, growing in relationship with one another and gaining memories and insights which will stay with us for a life time.

Day 1
Depart from London Luton on our flight to Tel Aviv. On arrival we will be met and transferred to Bethlehem for dinner and overnight.

Day 2
We have a walking tour of Bethlehem beginning with Manger Square, visiting the Church of the Nativity and the Milk grotto. We visit Bethlehem Bible College for lunch (own expense) and the opportunity to talk with students and staff.
Dinner and overnight in Bethlehem.

Day 3
After breakfast visit St Aphrem Syrian Christian school then Beit Sahour Shepherd’s Fields grotto where we celebrate the Eucharist. We meet with local Palestinian Christians for dialogue in a local restaurant and then those who wish may return to the Grotto church for a time of prayer. Free time in Bethlehem. In the evening drive to the wonderfully evocative Shepherds Fields restaurant for a traditional Palestinian meal in a Bedouin tent.
Dinner and overnight in Bethlehem.

Day 4
We leave Bethlehem and make the steep descent into the Wadi Quelt, celebrating the Eucharist in the desert where Jesus fasted at the start of his ministry. We visit Qumran and after lunch (at own expense) take a dip in the Dead Sea. We drive to Jerusalem where there will be opportunity to meet with Rabbis for Peace, an organisation actively working for reconciliation.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 5
We now turn and face towards Jerusalem beginning at the top of the Mount of Olives for a spectacular view over the Old City. Follow in the steps of Christ as he makes his last journey on earth. A full day of exploration lies ahead of us, beginning at the church of Paternoster. Then we descend to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations. After a visit to the Garden Tomb we enter Jerusalem through the Lions gate.
Lunch (at own expense), then follow the Via Dolorosa through the old lanes to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Return in our own time to our hotel where we have dinner and time to relax.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 6
Our final day in Jerusalem begins at Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and the Western (Wailing) Wall. Free afternoon when extra trips may be arranged.
Dinner and overnight Jerusalem.

Day 7
We drive north to Nazareth and visit the Church of the Annunciation before lunch at St Margaret’s where we will meet with local Palestinian Christians. We continue to Nazareth Village for a visit and then drive to Pilgarhaus, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, for a 2-night stay.
Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

Day 8
After breakfast we visit the sites associated with Jesus’ lakeside ministry, beginning at the Mount of the Beatitudes, then walking downhill past the Cave of the Shepherds to the Church of St Peter’s Primacy at Tabgha and the traditional site of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Continue to Capernaum before returning to the Pilgerhaus.
The afternoon is free to relax by the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

“Just a note to report that the trip to Jordan went very well. We all arrived home safely yesterday morning.

The group gelled together well and we all thoroughly enjoyed the itinerary and magnificent scenery. Everyone was surprised to realise how much Bible history had taken place there.”
