A wonderful tour of the Holy Land

Led by the Rev’d Alan Munden

Monday 24th September - Monday 1st October 2018

Visiting the Holy Land is always a special experience. We see places already known to us through our Bible reading eg Jerusalem, Jericho, Galilee and Capernaum; and significant sites such as Sepphoris, Masada and Qumran.

The combination of three world faiths, history, geography and politics provides an interesting background to our own Christian faith and worship.

Alan Munden is currently on the staff team at Jesmond Parish Church, Newcastle upon Tyne having previously served in Anglican churches in Cheltenham and Coventry. This will be his seventh visit to Israel.

His main interests are biblical archaeology and the history of Protestant mission.

Monday
We leave Manchester on a direct flight to Tel Aviv, where we will be met on arrival for transfer to our hotel in Netanya for dinner and overnight.

Tuesday
We drive to Caesarea (the Roman capital) to see the amphitheatre and aquaduct and then continue to Megiddo, Sepphoris, and Nazareth Village (depicting life as in the times of Jesus), we continue to Tiberias for dinner and overnight.

Wednesday
We start the day with a visit to the 2000 year old ancient boat at a nearby kibbutz. We sail across the Sea of Galilee on a replica of this boat, pausing during this for worship. We visit sites associated with Jesus’ ministry: Migdal (where a 1st century synagogue has recently been found); Visit Chorazim, Capernaum (Jesus’ home town, with its ancient synagogue and Peter’s house); and Tabgha (possible site of the feeding of the 5000, and a lakeside resurrection appearance of Jesus) and the Mount of Beatitudes (the setting of the Sermon on the Mount).
Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

Thursday
We travel south, visiting Beth Shean, Qasr al Yahud (place of John’s baptisms); Jericho (one of Herod’s palaces), Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, possibly associated with John the Baptist; arriving in Jerusalem, we view the Old City from the Mount of Olives. We see the Western Wall; and explore the Western Wall tunnels.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Friday
We visit the Herodion (Herod’s palace and burial place) and drive along the shore of the Dead Sea (the lowest place on the earth’s surface), and visit the ancient fortress of Masada (another of Herod’s fortresses, and the famed site of Jewish resistance); Depending on the weather, it may be possible to “float” in the Dead Sea.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Saturday
Visit the Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds Fields. Return to Jerusalem for a walking tour of the Old City.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Sunday
We join the 9.30 am service at Christchurch. We then trace the Palm Sunday path down from the Mount of Olives into the city, pausing at the Dominus Flavit church (recalling Jesus weeping over Jerusalem). We see Gethsemane and then visit the Pool of Siloam.
Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Monday
Visit Yad Vashem and the Bible Lands Museum and then a free afternoon until we travel to Tel Aviv for our return flight to Manchester.
